Akhmim Project 2016 - 2017

The Rotary project for the year 2016-2017 is the development of Akhmim Traditional Textile Weaving and Embroidery. A heritage maintained from generation to generation and a main source of income to Akhmim Village families.

Embroidery
The designs are inspired by the motifs adorning coptic fabrics woven from the 4th to the 9th century. Some of these nile women have the courage to try their own designs. Their work of creation starts with a chalk in hand. They make a quick sketch on the fabric. A house appears, or an animal, an immense flower. Their source of inspiration is their own environment.

Weaving
Weaving has a long and significant history in Egypt. Fragments of linen and cotton textiles have been found dating back to the neolithic period. The ancient textiles were woven on looms without pedals.
